We said this catalogue carries nothing scented, and that holds for everything that touches skin. Winter Rose is a candle: the rose is a cold-pressed essential oil in the wax at 0.4 percent — the level at which you notice it when you move and forget it when you sit still. It reads more like a room that has roses in it than like a rose candle.
The ribbed vessel is cast stone, heavy enough to stay put, and the wick is cotton. Burn time is roughly forty hours. Like Evening Pair, it is poured to a low temperature, but it is a candle first and should be treated as one.
Why this piece exists
Winter Rose is our one scented product, and the scent load is the whole argument: 0.4% cold-pressed rose absolute in the wax, which is the level at which you notice the rose when you cross the room and forget it when you sit down. We tested at 1% and it smelled like a shop. At 0.4% it smells like a room that has roses in it, which was the brief's exact sentence.
The ribbed vessel is cast stone in a mould we commissioned from a supplier who normally does architectural fixtures. The ribs are not style — they thicken the wall so the vessel holds heat evenly and the last centimetre of wax burns at the same temperature as the first. It is the heaviest candle per centimetre we have handled, and it will outlive the wax by years.
Who it suits
- People who dislike scented candles but might tolerate one done quietly
- Gift buyers who need the safe-but-considered option
- Anyone who has already bought Evening Pair and wants the winter version
Who it does not suit
- Fragrance-forward households — at 0.4% this will disappoint anyone who wants a scented room
- Bathroom use; stone and steam are fine but the wick hates a draught

Use and care
Everything we know about keeping it.
Burning
Trim the wick to 5 mm before each light, burn at least an hour the first time, and never more than three hours at a stretch. Keep the pool clear of debris, including fallen petals if you keep roses in the same room.
After
Once the wax is finished, pour out the last warm tablespoonful and wipe the vessel; the stone washes with soap and water and makes a good brush pot or vase.
Gift note
This is the one piece in the catalogue we will wrap without being asked — the cylinder ships inside a plain outer box either way.
Long-term
The vessel is the keeper. Once the wax is a millimetre from the base, pour out the last warm tablespoonful, wipe with a paper towel, and wash the stone with hot soapy water — it comes out as a heavy brush pot or a bud vase, and about half our reorders are from people buying the candle again to get a second vessel. The cylinder box is rigid enough to store the vessel between seasons, which is what we designed it for.
Material safety. Platinum-cured silicone, phthalate-free, non-porous. Clean with warm water and mild unscented soap or a silicone-safe cleanser; avoid alcohol and silicone-based lubricants, which dull a matte finish and can leave a film. Full detail in the materials guide.
