Opal is what it looks like: smoked borosilicate glass, kiln-annealed over twelve hours so the internal stress is gone, polished until it feels like standing water. There is no motor. Warm it in your hands or in a bowl of body-warm water and it holds that temperature far longer than any powered piece.

We sell it because a minority of our customers asked for exactly this and could not find it done properly: non-porous, compatible with every lubricant including silicone, boilable for cleaning, and beautiful enough to live on a shelf without apology. It is also the only piece in the catalogue with no electronics to age — with basic care it will outlast the company that made it.

Why this piece exists

Opal is the product we were talked into and then thanked for. A glass wand is a decision a silicone house does not make lightly: different supplier, different QC, a breakage rate to absorb, and a customer service script for 'it chipped'. What settled it was holding a finished annealed piece — the weight, the temperature, the absolute silence of an object with nothing inside it.

The smoke tint is not cosmetic: it hides water spots and fingerprints that clear glass advertises. The annealing certificate in the box is real — each batch is tested, and the card has the batch number. We know of no other brand that ships one, and we did not add the cost for marketing; we added it because the first question everyone asks about glass is 'will it break'.

Who it suits

  • People who want zero electronics — nothing to charge, nothing to age
  • Silicone-lubricant users (glass is compatible with everything)
  • Anyone who boils their pieces for cleaning and wants that to be official

Who it does not suit

  • Clumsy storage — it chips against stone, tile and other glass
  • Anyone wanting vibration; there is genuinely none, and the guide explains what temperature play does instead

Use and care

Everything we know about keeping it.

Before the first use

Wash with hot soapy water or boil for three minutes. Check the surface by eye and fingertip — the polish should be unbroken.

Cleaning

Anything goes: boil, dishwasher top rack, or a wipe with 70% alcohol, which glass shrugs off. Dry and store

Storage

Glass against stone chips; keep it in the padded sleeve or on cloth. Never test it on tile floors.

Long-term

Glass is the only material in the catalogue that does not age: no battery, no silicone set, no glaze to chip — the surface is the material all the way through, so a scratch is a scratch and not a gateway for anything. The failures are all mechanical: chips from hard surfaces, and the 0.2% of pieces that fail our tap test before shipping and never reach you. Store it in the sleeve, check it by eye after any drop, and it is the piece you will still own in twenty years.

Material safety. Platinum-cured silicone, phthalate-free, non-porous. Clean with warm water and mild unscented soap or a silicone-safe cleanser; avoid alcohol and silicone-based lubricants, which dull a matte finish and can leave a film. Full detail in the materials guide.

About this piece

Will it break inside the body?
Borosilicate does not shatter the way soda glass does, and a properly annealed wand under normal use does not fail — this is the material laboratory glassware is made from. The risks are all external: drops onto hard floors, and storing it loose against other hard objects.
Can I warm it in the microwave?
No microwave — warm water only. Microwave heating heats unevenly through glass and creates the exact internal stress the annealing removed. Hot tap water for five minutes is the whole ritual.
