Velvet Hour is the piece we return to when a design has to disappear into a room. The body is one uninterrupted curve of matte silicone with no seam along its length, finished with a narrow brushed steel band at the base. It stands upright on its own, which sounds like a small thing until you have lived with objects that roll off a nightstand.

The motor sits low in the handle rather than at the tip, so the movement reads as a slow pulse instead of a buzz. Eight intensities, three patterns, and a single button that does not require a manual after the first week. Charging is magnetic and takes ninety minutes; a full charge covers roughly two hours of use at the middle setting.

Why this piece exists

Velvet Hour took eleven prototypes, and the argument in every one of them was the base. Early versions sat on a flat disc that looked medical; later ones had no base at all and rolled off every surface we tested them on. The weighted steel foot was the compromise that ended the argument — it makes the piece stand like a small sculpture, and it dampens the vibration before it reaches the shelf, so nothing rattles.

The curve is drawn from the profile of a hand held loosely, which is why it reads as familiar rather than clinical. There is no seam along the silicone because the body is poured in one piece around the motor; the only join on the entire object is where the steel foot meets the base, and it is machined to a tolerance you can feel with a thumbnail.

Who it suits

  • First-time buyers who want a broad, adjustable shape rather than a pointed one
  • Anyone who wants the piece to live on a shelf, not in a drawer
  • People sensitive to noise — the damped base and low-speed motor are the quietest combination in the range

Who it does not suit

  • Anyone who wants intense, pinpoint sensation — Gilded Arc or Aurelia concentrate better
  • Travel-first users: at 212 g it is the heaviest piece we sell; the Quiet Case fits it, but a bag notices it

Use and care

Everything we know about keeping it.

Before the first use

Charge to full before the first use; the indicator holds a steady light when complete. Wash the body with warm water and a mild unscented soap, then dry it with a lint-free cloth. Silicone does not need to be conditioned, and adding oil or talc will only leave a film that attracts dust.

Cleaning

Use a dedicated silicone-safe cleanser or unscented soap and water. Avoid cleansers built on silicone oil, which can soften the surface over time. The body is sealed to IPX7, so it can be rinsed under running water, but the charging contacts should be dried before the cable goes back on.

Storage

Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from other silicone items for long periods, since surfaces in prolonged contact can bond. The cotton sleeve it ships in is enough. If you store it in a case, leave the case open until the body is fully dry.

Travel and long-term

For flights, put it in the Quiet Case with the lock set — the sleeve alone will not stop it switching on in a bag, and a device that buzzes in an overhead bin is a story you do not want. Long-term, silicone does not expire, but the battery does: run it down to half and top it up every three months if it sits unused, and expect roughly five hundred full cycles before capacity starts to fall away.

Material safety. Platinum-cured silicone, phthalate-free, non-porous. Clean with warm water and mild unscented soap or a silicone-safe cleanser; avoid alcohol and silicone-based lubricants, which dull a matte finish and can leave a film. Full detail in the materials guide.

About this piece

Can I use Velvet Hour in the bath?
Yes — the body is sealed to IPX7, so it can be fully submerged for cleaning and used in the bath. Dry the charging contacts before the cable goes back on.
Why does the base get warm?
The steel foot conducts a little warmth from the motor during long sessions. It stays well below skin temperature and is a sign the damping is working, not a fault.
